William Allison (1855) and James Allison (1857)

My great-grandmother had 2 younger brothers, William and James, who were born at Carstairs, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Both seem to disappear after 1871 and don't seem to appear anywhere else in the UK as far as I can tell. Is there anyone who can tell me what happened to them? Did they emigrate somewhere? Any information would be gratefully received.
