Joshua you can start by collecting all oral and written information available through your family....stories, dates, place names, birth, marriage and death certificates etc. Once you have confirmed this data by documents you can start searching backwards, one generation at a time. And you can then start searching sites like Genforum, the LDS FamilySearch, Cindy's List, online census records, etc. etc. There is a tremendous amount of information online.
