James Allison

During my research of Allison Families, I have come across many James Allison. The following is an attempt to sort the James Allison from the bringing of America up until 1850. If you know of additional James Allison please add them to the list. If you have additional information on anyone listed, please post. I will repost a final listing.

Section 1

I-1. Family of John Allison the Elder who died in Lancaster County, Pa in 1728.

II-1.       James Allison: James is the eldest son of John the Elder and Jannett and born Nov. 12, 1693 in Ireland. James’s will dated Aug. 31, 1762, suggests he lived to an age of 69 years. The will mentions his wife Rebehak, Executrix; son James; grandsons (he called nephews) James and John DeFrance sons of his daughter Anna DeFrance; daughter Janet Watts and husband William Watts; daughter Margaret Bowman; daughter Sarah; and daughter Rebecca. In the Lancaster County Miscellaneous Book of 1768-1772 page 41, William Allison reports to the court as executor of his brother Robert’s will that he has made the distribution of the legacy, to James, son of his brother James. James’s wife, Rebehak, maiden name is unknown. Rebehak’s will dated Jan. 10, 1764, names daughter Sarah, Rebehak, Jean, and Margaret. She does not mention her daughter Anna, she died two years earlier, she does mention Anna’s children James and John DeFrance. She also mentions her son James and brother John Allison. I had originally thought that when Rebehak mentioned her brother John Allison, she really meant to write brother-in-law John Allison, should be investigated and correlated with other John Allisons of the period.

III-1.        James Allison: (II-1, James: I-1, John) The son of James and Rebekah Allison. Born circa 1720, his will dated March 12, 1776, mentions sister Sarah, nephews James and John DeFrance, niece Jane Caldwell (Killwell) daughter of sister Rebecca, sons and daughters of his sister Janet Watt and of his sister Margaret Bowman of North Carolina. Will proven April 24, 1776 Donegal Township, information from the will suggests James was not married.

III-23. James Allison: (John; John) The son of John Allison, Esq. and Ann Anderson of Lancaster County, Pa. He was born circa 1754.

IV-36.        James Allison: (William; William; John) The son of William Allison and Mary McLanahan.. Born June 5, 1798 and died Jan. 25, 1781. Wife named Susan.

IV-71.       James Allison (III-22, John; II-5, John; I-1, John) The son of Lt. Colonel John Allison and Rebecca McRae. Born Dec. 12, 1799 and died Sept. 10, 1805.

V-53.        James Allison: (James; William; William; John) The son of James Allison

V-67.       James L. Allison: (John H.; Patrick; John; John) Born circa 1837 in Lawrence County, Kentucky. He is the son of John H. Allison of Flemingsburg, Kentucky and Mary Jane Johns from Floyd County.

Section 2

RA-1. Family of Richard Allison who’s will from Lancaster County, Pa is dated 1757. In his will he names the following children.
                     RA2. James Allison,
                     RA3. Isabella Allison,
                     RA4. William Allison,
                     RA5. Mary Allison,

RA2. James Allison: (Richard) Probably born in the 1720’s and married Rebecca Howard circa 1740’s. There has been confusion as to which James Allison, Rebecca Howard married. They are several James Allison in and near Lancaster County at this time. Two pieces of information are available to make this decision. The wife of James Allison son of John Allison is also named Rebecca, however she died in 1764, Rebecca Howard Allison daughter of Gordon Howard was still processing deeds in 1767. This eliminates James Allison son of John Allison as her spouse. The Orphan’s Court of Lancaster County, explains that Rebecca the wife of James Allison son of Richard Allison remarried James Patterson. From “History of Lancaster County” by Klein, dated 1926; states that Gordon Howard was the father-in-law of James Patterson. This is true, on two fronts, James Patterson first married Susannah Howard, after she died he married her sister of Rebecca Howard. Apparently after Susannah Howard Patterson and James Allison died, Rebecca marries James Patterson.

James died intestate, circa 1767, the Lancaster County Deed BB-237 mentions James Allison’s daughters Martha Ross and Elizabeth and his sons James and Richard Allison. Lancaster County Miscellaneous Book, Years 1768 to1772: Page 26; Nov. 25, 1768, Court appoints William Miller, Mountjoy Township, guardian over the estate of Elizabeth Allison, Richard Allison, and James Allison minor children of James Allison, late Donegal Township, deceased. The on Sept. 7, 1768 court records state James Patterson married Rebecca the widow of James Allison, late of Donegal Township, deceased. Who left minors Elizabeth, Richard, and James Allison with William Miller their guardian.

Children of James and Rebecca Howard

                            RA6. Martha Allison Ross
                            RA7. Richard Allison
                            RA8. Elizabeth Allison
                            RA9. James Allison

RA9. James Allison: (James, Richard) Probable born circa 1745. No additional information is available.

James Allison Sr.’s will of 1738 of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania mentions James Allison, Sr, of Cormick Plains, Jean his wife, Daughter Isabel, son James and son John. I have tried matching James Allison of Cormick Plains with James Allison of Item 469 in Morrison’s Book Morrison’s Book mentions son William, John, and James. Need help.

James Allison’s will of 1749 of the Township of Salibury mentions wife Mary, son John under age 21, daughter Margaret, and daughter Mary.

James Allison of Newton Township of Cumberland County, mentions wife Elizabeth, son John, daughter Isabella, son Robert, and daughter Elizabeth.

James Allison of Rowan County North Carolina made a will dated Aug. 25, 1760. He names his wife Mary and all children are under age and not mentioned. He mentions his brother Andrew Allison of Rowan County. The will of Thomas Allison of Rowan county also mentions his brother Andrew Allison. Both James, Andrew, and Thomas once lived in Lancaster County. Looking at possible link between this James Allison and James who’s will is dated 1749.
