Hi Elizabeth --

Yes, this IS the same family. "Mattie" is the usual nickname for "Matilda," but is sometimes also used for "Martha." In your case, it's MARTHA HENRIETTA HAMILTON, b. Jan. 21, 1861, Cherokee Co., AL; m. John H. (sic -- we know this should be "A." -- see my encapsulation of the 1900-1930 censuses, below) KENNEDY, Jan. 18, 1882, Cherokee Co., AL; d. ca. 1952, Cherokee Co., AL (sic -- might have died in Chattooga Co., GA).

The above is according to one of the sources I gave to you, Margaret Massey. Here is the link I originally gave you for Margaret:

http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=marge71&id=I010299

If, while on that page, you click on the link for Child #6, "Martha Henrietta Hamilton," you will go to the following page URL, which contains the above information about "Martha" and "John H.":

http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=marge71&id=I010309

This same info is also contained on Jerry A. Masters' pages, the other reference I gave you. I guess my eyes just stopped on the "first" Kennedy I saw, so I got caught up in the "wrong" Hamilton/Kennedy marriage. Just to dot the "i's" and cross the "t's," looking at digital photography of various census images, I see these EXACT enumerations:

1. 1900, Dist. 128, Waterloo (no longer exists), Cherokee Co., AL, "John A." and "Mattie H." Hamilton. John's b. is shown as Nov. 1854, AL, Mattie's as Jan. 1861, AL. Waterloo is an old "district" adjoining the town of Gaylesville, about 8-10 miles South of the original Cherokee Co., AL, Hamilton homestead, and is, basically near the end of the old road to the river port, once known as the Alabama Highway (now Alabama Avenue), through Chattooga Co., GA's old "Seminole District," where WH and CCA first lived before they came to the Broomtown Valley in Cherokee Co., AL.

2. 1910, Dist. 30, Alpine, Chattooga Co., GA, again "John A." and "Mattie H." Alpine is just across the AL/GA border into GA and is less than 5 miles from the original Hamilton homestead in Cherokee Co. Remember, also, that Wm. and Caroline (Allison) Hamilton were married in Chattooga Co., GA, quite nearby -- I would say Menlo, GA might be a pretty worthwhile place to check for their Marriage Cert -- Summerville is the Chattooga Co. seat -- on the 1850 Census, they lived in Seminole Dist., Chattooga Co., GA (this is the area around Lyerly and Chattoogaville, down either Back Valley Road or Alabama Avenue, once known as the Alabama Highway, from Lyerly SE to the AL/GA border -- Seminole District no longer exists -- and, on the north side of Back Valley is the Dirt Cellar (or Dirt Seller -- seen it both ways on official US Topo maps) Ridge, which separates Back Valley from the historic Broomtown Valley, which runs all the way from Menlo, GA, down past Jamestown, AL -- in the Broomtown Valley, 3-5 miles NE of Jamestown, is where WH and CCA first settled when they came from Chattooga Co., GA, to Cherokee Co., AL -- all of this is within a distance of 10 miles).

3. 1920, Dist 34 (this is ALPINE, prob. same residence as 1910), Menlo, Chattooga Co., GA, again "John A." and "Mattie H."

4. 1930, on Sixth Avenue, Dist. 11 (this is now inside the south end of Menlo), Menlo, Chattooga Co., GA, once again, "John A." and "Mattie H." John, age 75, now has his own business as a "Gardner" (sic). Before this, he either owned or was associated with grocery stores.

I can't find death records for either John or Mattie (Hamilton) Kennedy, at least not that I can be sure of to my own satisfaction. Hopefully you have this information. If not, you need look no further than Chattooga Co., GA, and Cherokee Co., AL, as it appears to me that this couple never lived anywhere else in their lifetimes after marriage.

As I previously stated, I have no further info on this family and I VERY STRONGLY suggest that you communicate directly with YOUR COUSINS, Margaret Massey and/or Jerry Masters. It appears to me that they have already done some hard-copy research and probably possess documents that would be of great interest to you, documentation to which I have no access.

Best regards,

Mike Collier
