Jimmy, The first thing you need to do is find the family on the 1900 census. Your grandfather would be 16 or 17, probably still at home. Go to the nearest large Library, they will have the 1900 census. Someone will show you how to look it up on Soundex. Then the actual census pages. That should give you his parents names and birthplace. Then try to find the parents in earlier census.
I am still working on the two male heirs of William and Sara Alley, John and William in my line. I am on the verge of success I think, although most information I get just seems to contradict what I have allready. I believe that my William was brother to Thomas Alley who was the father of the 5 Alley brothers you mentioned who settled in Alleyton. Please let me know what you find out.
