My research of two prominent Alley/Allee lines all lead back to France in the 14-1500's. Check out William Alley (The Bishop of Exeter) who came from France to Eng. and became the Bishop. This family resulted in all the Thomas I, II, III etc., in Virginia. The other (my line) also from France fled the reformation in the church, escaped to Mannheim Germany, then on to Holland, then to Hackensack New Jersey then Delaware, and on to VA. They began with Jean D'Ailly later Allee/Alley. Try a google search on either Jean D' Ailly or William Bishop of Exeter and you'll find a lot of good reading. This is not to say that some didn't pass through Scottland etc.. hope it helps.
