Hey Laura. I just found this place. Anyway Major Ronald Alley was my uncle. He married Erna (from Germany) after ww2.He was in the Army Field Artillery in Korea during the conflict there. He was captured by the N.Koreans and held for two (?)years He was returned to American forces and spent time in the hospital recovering. Upon his release he was tried, for treason (treating with the enemy) and thrown into Leavenworth for 5 years , and then released.
The facts: He married a German so soon after WW2, strike one
He was very outspoken, naturally being from Maine and an Alley! Strike 2 (in the Army)
He was the ranking person in the POW camp in N Korea and therefore was responsible for the very lives of those under him.
The NK.s have him a choice. Either you tell us what we want to know or we will torture your men and kill them.
Naturally he gave them the info they wanted, to spare his men the grief. The N.K.s Already had the info, they just wanted confirmation of it. There was NO name, rank and serial # limit at that time ,let alone ANY concept of anti interrogation techiniques . The Army had no idea how to resist the methods used. So that was strike 3.
Plus the fact that all this Bull happened during the McArthy era (Commies! Every where!)
Major Ronald Alley (brother, Donald Howard Alley, my father ) was disgraced after being railroaded by the Military and others, lived out his life as a Fuller brush salesman, due to the publics reluctance to hire a "German-loving commie sympathiser" He had two children that live ,to date up north,Maine.Sorry this is soo long winded. drop me a line.
Dale Edwin Alley
