I am trying to understand the connections between the Alleys of Henrico and the Baughans of Henrico. Can anyone offer any insight into this?

In the 1850 census for Henrico County, Virginia, an Edward Alley, age 45 was enumerated with my great, great, great grandparents, Littleberry Tucker and Sally (Smoot)Baughan in Tuckahoe district. That would put his year of birth around 1805.

The following are some deed records for western Henrico County. On 4 Oct 1742, Thomas Smith sold to Richard East a plantation which was bounded by Thomas Ally, Thomas Baughan and Stony Run. East resold the land to William Ellis in 1745, again listing Thomas Baughan as an adjoining landowner. On 5 Nov 1748, Thomas Baughan and Sarah his wife sold land on a branch of Long and Hungry Branch and witnesses to the deed were John Ellis, James Alley and Edmund Alley. On 5 Feb 1749 [48/49 or 49/50?], Thomas Baughan sold to William Ellis 100 acres on a branch of Deep Run called Stony Run, on which Baughan then lived. This land was bounded by the lands of Alexander Padason, Cannon or Sincock, the land William Ellis bought from Richard East, and by Thomas Alley. On 1 Oct 1750, Samuel Pincham sold to Thomas Cottrell 100 acres bounded by the bank of Deep Run and went along Sincock’s line to Thomas Baughan, then on Baughan’s line to Thomas Alley, then on Alley’s line (2 legs) to Thomas Cottrell, and on Cottrell’s line to Deep Run. The final bound was down Deep Run to the beginning.

At the August Court for 1768, orders were issued to the Wardens of Henrico Parish to bind out orphans. They were to bind out Isham Alley and Isaiah Alley, orphans of Thomas Alley Junr., and were to bind out “Littlebury Baughan son of Susanna Baughan.” Hen. OB 1767-69, p. 286.

On 24th day of December, 1820, Stephen Duvall and Lucy his wife sold to Littleberry Tucker Baughn of the County of Henrico a certain parcel of land lying in the County of Henrico on the waters of Chickahominy and bounded as follows, Beginning at a corner pine and running thence North forty five Degrees West Ninety six poles to a white oak on John Alley’s line thence with said Alley’s line North Thirty six and a half degrees East fifty three and a half poles to the Richmond Turnpike then down the Turnpike south Eighty one and a half Degrees East One hundred and twelve poles thence South one and a half degrees West forty two poles to Red Oak thence South fifty six Degrees West Ninety poles to the beginning.

The Alleys and the Baughans were neighbors, for sure. Was there a closer relationship than just neighbors? Why was Edward Alley living with LT and Sally Baughan in 1850?

Anybody know?
