I am still banging my head against the brick wall. My great grandfather, Andrew Sholty, married Mary Ann Alley in Indiana in 1857 before he went off to the civil war. Story has it that she taught him to read and write since she wanted to hear from him personally and not have someone else write for him, while he was in the war. Her first born was John Cyrus Sholty, my grandfather, who was born in 1858. I have not been able to find Mary in censuses. Andrew was listed as 18 years old in Lancaster County PA in the 1850 census...So I figure that Mary Ann Alley would have been born in the 1830's also. Help!!!! Are there any ideas out there? Where is grandma?
