Speaking of the various spellings ,I know what you mean about it driving you mad !!!!!
There must be around 20 ways of spelling the surname ,I found three different ones in my family (all siblings ) on the same census in Barnsley
My ancestor James Allenby born about 1800 probably came from North Yorkshire poss .County Durham .He married about 1820 to unknown first wife and had one son William born in Knareborough about 1821 .His second maariage was in Darlington to Elizabeth French in 1827 , they came to live in Monk Bretton ,Barnsley about 1837 - he was a weaver .The spelling changed to Allemby over the years -all by the 1901 census .But I believe some are spelted Allenby in West Yorkshire -Confusing indeed !!!!!!
Thanks Dave Allemby ,Barnsley
