Joseph Allen and William Hackney
I am researching Joseph Allen who was born in Stafford County, VA about 1699 and died in Orange (now Rockingham) County, NC in 1770. His parents were John and Ursula Allen. He had a brother named George and almost certainly a brother named John. His first wife was named Mary, and his second Sarah. His uncle, William Allen, owned considerable land in the area, and had sons named John and William.
I will be delighted to get any real data anyone has for Joseph, but, specifically, I'm trying to find out about his association with William Hackney.
On March 7, 1722/1723, William Hackney and John Allen Jr. got a grant for 1013 acres in the headwaters of Town Run in Stafford (later Prince William and now Fauquier) County. I don't know if John Allen Jr. was Joseph's brother, or his cousin. On March 11, 1722/1723, William Hackney got a grant for 247 acres on Brent Town Run. The land was said to adjoin his and [John] Allen. William Hackney then conveyed the 247 acres to Joseph Allen and his brother, George Allen.
Wiliam Hackney had a close association with the Allen family. Besides the above transactions, he also bought land from Joseph's uncle, William Allen, and was bondsman for George Allen's widow, Jane, in 1736. He almost certainly was George Allen's father-in-law, and his conveying land to Joseph and George hints that he might have been Joseph's father-in-law as well.
Does anyone have any thoughts on the Allen/Hackney connection?
