Held To The Grand Jury ~ Allen and West

Thank you again, Deborah, for posting these articles. Family tradition says that my great-grandfather William James Allen hit a man over the head with a hammer and kiled him in a fight. Family tradition excuses him because he was so hardened by the Civil War (35 years earlier!!!). I believe this account of "William T. Allen" may be the incident. It is interesting that he hit a woman and not a man and with an ax rather than a hammer. But, happily, the victim did not die. Soon after, William James Allen took his family to northern Nebraska (out of state and out of the jursidiction of Iowa). Family tradition says he was fleeing justice. He was sickly from illnesses (as the article indicates) acquired during long days along the Mississippi marshes during the siege of Vicksburg. Thanks again, this is exciting to us.
