Hi Chris,
my family surname is Allardyce only by a mistake on my father's birthlines, as the rest of my uncles all have a variant spelling of Allardice.
Our family is strong in the east of Scotland, Dundee area. Hope this might prove a little helpful in why there are variants of the surname.
