Gilbert,

I don't know that anything has been "proven" about the origins of the Allardyce name. As best as we can tell, it was derived from a Celtic place name. Some mss. suggest that the family is of Norman descent. However, this is far from "proven" and lies more in the realm of an educated guess. The family is discussed in some mss. as "being a noble family of high rank" in the assumption that the lands were originally granted by William the Conqueror around 1066. But again, there is no proof, just speculation. As a matter of fact, the Core Team is currently engaged in research as to the origins of our name and we have had several email conversations with many scholarly individuals lately with quite a bit of information. Look for our findings to be published on www.allardice.org sometime in the future.

Sincerely,

Jim Allerdice
