a South Africa connection?

According to Canadian Attestation papers from WWI, my husband's grandfather, David Allardice listed his father, Alexander Allardice as living in Johannsberg, South Africa. We have no idea whether he remained there - or even why he was there. Wondering if anyone has any info on a S. Africa branch of the family.
These papers were dated 23 April 1917; David was born 20 Nov. 1893 in Dundee, Scotland; and was living in Rochester, NY at the time.
