I had given up on my Longpre ancestors several years ago.Today you got me started again. This is what I came up with:
In Message #476 Cecile Longpre said that there is a copy of the parish record at Notre-Dame de Montreal for the marriage of Guillaume and Catherine Blot and the priest wrote “anglais de nation et la ville quefille”.
There is also the original contract of Notary Michel LePailleur and he wrote “natif de quefille, colonie de la nouvelle angleterre” and he wrote that his father was dead but his mother Jeanne Allard was alive. (She may have been alive when he was captured and not when he got married.)
It is quite possible that Guillaume came from Deerfield and the name was lost in the translation and became "Quefille".Guillaume would have been about 5 when he was captured and in a few short years he went from speaking English, toAbénaquis and on to French by the time he was a young man.Even his name Longpre/Longley could have been something else.
During that period few individuals could write their names and they did not care how others wrote their name or place of origin. We are very fortunate to trace this ancestor as far as we have.Janet
