This may be a repost - not sure if this got posted already in a draft form - laptop has a will of its own!! I recently came across an interesting marriage entry in the LMA microfilm of St Matthew Maryebone. I am researching the GADSBY family but there is a 2nd marriage between John GADSBY and Rosina ALLEN whose children are generally named ..... ALLEN GADSBY. In this marriage entry, the groom, his father and a witness (brother?) seem to have reversed their names to be e.g. George GADSBY ALLEN. They are almost certainly the same individuals that previously appeared as e.g. George ALLEN GADSBY. Parish Register, April 24th 1893 St Matthew, Marylebone, Middlesex George GADSBY ALLEN age 41, wid, Coach Painter 53 Devonshire Street. Father: GADSBY ALLEN, Coach Joiner Julia HAWKINS age 40, wid, Domestic Servant, 53 Devonshire Street. Father George NUTKINS, Cab Proprietor. Witnesses: Alfred GADSBY ALLEN and Margaret KENNEDY These Gadsby ALLEN men seem to fit the people I have as the descendents of Rosina ALLEN and John GADSBY and known as '..... Allen GADSBY' - but who was the one just shown as Gadsby ALLEN with no other first name ? and why did they switch their names round? Perhaps it was Alfred Allen GADSBY that was the witness at the marriage of George Gadsby ALLEN (probably his brother) and Julia HAWKINS and both had changed their names around to use their mother's surname, ALLEN rather than their father's, GADSBY. Does anyone have any light to shine on this enigma? There was also a baptism entry which may be of some relevance in connection with the ALLEN name. I only recorded it because the address is 12 Ranston Street, Marylebone which is the same road as my husband's GADSBY family lived in so I wondered if the ALLEN family were connected to the GADSBYs here. Devonshire Street and Ranston Street were anyway adjacent roads. Chris Gadsby Notify Administrator about this message?
