Hi, Judi,
Thank you so much for responding even though our Robert Allans are obviously different people. At least I know I can remove John and Bethia as possible parents.
I have tried looking for names that repeat within the family. The eldest son of my Robert Allan and Anna Leslie looks to be Althea (a woman's name???) on the 1850 PA census.Second son is Francis, then daughters Margaret, Isabella (my g-grandmother) and Mary, more sons Thomas, Robert and John.Isabella covered both grandmothers with her first born daughter, maternal grandfather with first born son and paternal grandfather with second born son.The rest of her children were daughters, and I have no idea where their names originate. My grandmother went totally away from any pattern by naming her first born son after a minister!
I don't know if there is a Lanarkshire connection or not. That came from searching for a Robert Allan who was a weaver. The family story is that he came from Paisley, but the closest I could find was a listing for Robert Allan, weaver, in Greenock.I also have found Robert Allan coming to New York from Greenock in 1828 on the ship Camillus, but I don't know for sure that it is my Robert Allan. The time frame is correct as their first chil was born in 1829 in PA.
There was a Margaret Allan here a few years ago before I got going with this. She descended from Robert and Anna Leslie Allan's son Thomas and didn't know of any siblings.I have tried contacting her here, then finally tried a direct email which came back as undeliverable. How I wish she was still here!I even have her Ohio answer!
Thank you again for taking the time to respond. It is a HUGE help even when there is no match.
Mary Lou
