I list him as a son of Asa and Sarah (_____) Alger. Asa Alger settled in Richmond, VT about 1794. "The first settlements along the south side of the Winooski River between the mouth of Huntington River at Jonesville and the village of Richmond, were made by Amos Brownson Jr., Matthew Cox, Jesse Green, William Douglas, Barney and Comfort Starr, Clement Hoyt, James and Peter Crane, James Hall, , Nathaniel and Asa Alger. (Hemenway, Vol. 1, 1867, page 844, column 2)

From there, he may have gone to Swanton, VT. Asa Alger Jr. and family were warned out of Swanton at an unspecified date. In the resolves of the General Assembly of VT in 1818, is one directing the state's attorney to give up two notes dated 4 Jul 1818 to Asa Alger, Asa Alger, Jr. and Nathan Alger, all of Swanton (A. Alger, 1876, page 11). At the time of the 1790 census, Asa and Nathaniel Alger were living in Huntington, VT.

Asa Alger served during the Revolution in Connecticut and Vermont. He resided in Thompson, CT, Richmond, VT in 1820, Ascot, Lower Canada in 1833. He died in 1844. His wife Sarah was living in Eaton, Lower Canada in 1844.

He applied for a pension on 19 Jun 1833 in Chittenden Co., VT at the age of 74. His application mentioned wife Sarah, brother Nathaniel who was 76 and brother Abraham, age 66, both living in Lower Canada. On 27 Jul 1848, son Lyman Alger applied, and was living in Orleans Co., VT. He states that his parents were married Sep 1784 in Thompson, CT. He stated that his father had died 29 Mar 1844 and his mother on 11 May 1848. The pension application mentions six children: Asa Alger Jr. of Parishville, NY; Nathan Alger, Roswell Alger and Sally Rich of Starksboro, VT and Lyman Alger and Orpha Russell of Ascott, QC.
