LIFE OF ANDREW ALGER
(By the kindness of the P. M. at Johnson's Creek, Jefferson Co., Wis., we have received the following interesting sketch of the life of the man who was so cruelly murdered by Mayberry. )
Johnson's Creek, Aug. 18, 1855.
Sir: It was not until this date that I was able to obtain an answer agreeable to your request. I saw an old school-mate of Mr. Andrew Alger, who has been familiar with all the past history of Mr. Alger ever since he was ten years of age, who gave me all the required information.
Andrew Alger was born in the town of Watson, Lewis Co., N. Y., in the year 1809, and lived there until he was 16 years of age; then he went to the black river country, and lived there for about two years; from there he shifted his quarters to the St. Lawrence river country, and remained there for two years; and from there he went to the town of Lorent, Jefferson Co., N. Y., and there he married him a wife, a Miss Patience Sweet, in March 1830[?]; then he moved to Chatauqua Co., N. Y., and lived there till the year 1839, when he like many others thought to try his luck in the West, and moved to Rockford, Winnebago Co., Ill.; there he lived till 1845, when he again moved to Farmington, Jefferson Co., Wis., where his widow and children remain to lament the loss of their murdered husband and father.
Mrs. Alger has a family of eight children, and to add to her deplorable condition, she gave birth to a young daughter on the 12th of this month.
Alger was a man in rather poor circumstances, but always provided well for his family. He was a very kind man to his wife and children. -- I think I can say with candor that I never saw a family that lived more agreeable. Alger was a moral and law-abiding man, and his loss is greatly lamented among his neighbors, as well as his family.
I have had more or less dealings with Mr. Alger for the last four years. I have sold him considerable timber and I have always found him very punctual in fulfilling his promises. He was engaged for the last two years in buying and selling timber at Johnson's Creek. As for his character, there is no man that can say anything against him.
