If anyone is researching the Alger family I have run across the 8th grade school diploma for Joseph Levi Alger. It's dated May 12, 1930 and is for sale at the Bloomington, Indiana Antique Mall. Cost is right around $21. I found him in the 1930 Crawford County, Illinois census in the household of his parents, Charley E and Jennie B.
