Eunice M. Raitz Alger was my G Grandmother. She gave the following info to my uncle Alger in 1975. I just recently came across it and have been sorting thru for a few months now. If anyone is interested in any of the people listed below, please email me, I have more information on most everyone. I am specifically looking for info on Ezra & Thankful Alger. Please let me know if you have run across anything. I'm at a wall now. Thank you, Kris Also, I have made notes as (Kris note:.....) The rest is original. ________________________________________________________ The following was transcribed by xxxxxxx x. Alger on 2/15/01 typescript given to me by Eunice M. Raitz Alger in 1975. The author of the typescript is unknow.. ‘Alger’ It is to be regretted that no record of our branch of the Alger family has been preserved in the public annals. I doubt whether one was ever written. My knowledge of our early ancestors is limited to what I can recall of things related and mentioned by our grandmother, Sarah Harriet Smith Alger, in my childhood days. She could tell the whole history from the arrival of the first ancestors in this Country. She has nothing written down, and in those days, it did not occur to me that ‘grandma’ would not always be here to keep the story fresh in our minds, so I am solely dependent on my childhood recollections for what is here set down. The name, Alger, was, in earlier days, spelled Algar, and was pronounced Awl’-gar (accent on the first syllable). Our uncle Ezra could remember when it was spelled and pronounced in that way. His father, our grandfather, did not use that spelling nor pronunciation which is sufficient reason for us to follow in his footsteps in that particular. He spelled it Alger and pronounced it so. The Alger family is of strictly English origin. Three brothers came to America from England (probably in the 1600’s) and from one of these descended our family line. (I am not certain whether he was our great-grandfather, or our great great grandfather, but I am inclined to think he was the former.) Another of the three brothers was the ancestor of Horatio Alger, Jr. the well-known writer of books for boys. Of the third brother we have no trace. The brother, from whom our branch of the family decents had a son, Ezra, our Uncle Ezra’s grandfather (so I think) for whom our Uncle Ezra was named. Our Uncle Ezra’s grandfather married, for his first wife, Thankful Lockwood. (I cannot say positively that her name was Thankful, I feel very sure that it was). They made their home in eastern New York state. Their children in the order of their ages, were Caty, George, Major, Fanny, James, Sarah, Seth, and Ann. Caty married Amos Morey and lived in South Sand Lake, NY many years. They had but one child, Oscar. He lived to be more than sixty years old and never married. George, lived in Hudson, NY and his descendants are living at present on that vicinity. He, himself was High Sheriff of Columbia county, NY. End of page Beginning of page Marriages James L.
