There has been tremendous confusion over the parentage of SARAH STOUGHTON, wife of ROGER ALGER. Most on this website consider her the daughter of JOHN and SARAH FITCH Stoughton of Windsor, CT. However, the inventory of John Stoughton of Windsor suggests otherwise. (Source: Charles W. Manwaring, "A Digest of the Early Connecticut Probate Records, 1710-1729", p. 309): The document lists his wife, Sarah [who later married and became Sarah Drake] ... and John's children "Nathaniel Stoughton, 2nd son, Elizabeth, SARAH, Rebeckah, Anne, Hannah, Mary, and Rachel Stoughton, to each of them, 27 pounds, 02s, 09d." The inventory date was 24 May 1712...yet the marriage of Roger Alger and his Sarah Stoughton had occurred some four years earlier on 8 February 1708. The inventory lists Sarah as a child, not as a married woman. Manwaring (p. 309) also included a court record dated 3 January 1713/14: "John, William and Sarah Stoughton and Joseph and Elizabeth Mather gave receipts for their several portions." Elizabeth, Sarah's older sister, had by that time married Joseph Mather. The court record clearly shows that John Stoughton's daughter, Sarah, was not married in 1713/14, or she would have been listed as Sarah Alger. Finally, according to Henry Stiles ("The History of Ancient Windsor" - Vol II, 1892, p. 728), John Stoughton (eldest son of Thomas and Mary WADSWORTH Stoughton and grandson of Thomas - the immigrant, both from England, then Dorchester, MA ,and then of Windsor, CT) and Sarah Fitch had 12 children. Sarah Stoughton was their 5th child and was born 12 December 1695. Recall that Roger Alger and Sarah Stoughton were married on 8 February 1708...this means that Sarah, daughter of John, would have been only 13 years old at the time of her marriage. This is highly unlikely, especially since the marriage occurred at Lyme (or New London, according to some?) CT, a place nearly 50 miles from John Stoughton's family home in Windsor. Other genealogists believe that Sarah Stoughton Alger was the daughter of NICHOLAS and SARAH HOAR Stoughton. I, too, am increasingly of that camp, and will begin researching that line as soon as possible. At this point I am having difficulty finding any "sourced and reliable" info on this Nicholas. Is he Nicholas of Taunton, MA? Who were his parents? Was his Sarah the daughter of Hezekiah Hoar? When and where were they married? Who were their children? I am descended from Betsey Alger/Ebenezer ADSIT. Betsey's parents were Roger Alger/Elizabeth Greenfield. And Roger's parents were Roger Alger/Sarah Stoughton. I welcome any constructive comments. Thanks, and good luck hunting! Jan Mongoven Notify Administrator about this message?
