Is this the one? He was born 19 Mar 1739 Lyme, CT, died 13 Aug 1829 Conesus, NY, son of John and Mary (Rogers) Alger, married first Elizabeth Wade and second Elizabeth (Pennock) Baldwin.
John Alger and his brother Silas settled in Strafford, VT in 1762, along with John's son Jared Alger. John owned one or more of the first mills in Strafford. He was a captain in the Revolution, serving in the Fifth Regiment, Vermont militia. He was then a resident of Thetford, VT. His commission paper, signed by Thomas Chittenden, is in the history collection of the Strafford (VT) Public Library (Charles Alger, Alger Family Lines, 1994, page 24).
Doherty (Settlers of the Beekman Patent, Dutchess County, New York, Vol. II, 1993, p. 122) indicates that John Alger took a lease in Lot 16 of the Beekman Patent on 10 Sep 1772 for himself and son Gerald (Jared, probably) and son John, Jr. Also, a John Alger was taxed in Nine Partners from 1762-3,in Beekman from June 1764 to June 1765, and again in Nine Partners in 1772. He identifies him with the John Alger of Strafford, VT and Conesus, NY.
