Dear Anthony,
Your mother, Julia, contacted AAFA in 1991 and gave us a worksheet listing the children of William Henry Alford and Katie Belle Childress, parents of Travis Elmer. We still don't have much additional information other than death dates from the Social Security Death Index and obituaries for two of the sons--Hubert Pershing (which your mother sent) and Norris Norwood (who died in 1990).
I was just contacted yesterday by an Annette Scalone who was inquiring about this very family. They are found in Red River County, TX in 1920, but I have been unable to find them prior to that time.
Your mother told us that William Henry was the son of Albert William Alford, born 1868 (don't know where) and Ellen _____ of Sevier Co. AR. Annette thinks William Henry was born in OK, although the 1920 census says TX. If you have any additonal information on your father's family's whereabouts prior to being in Red River Co. TX, we would be very happy to know about it. If not, we will be happy to work with you to try to discover the ancestry of this family.
We are particularly interested in TX Alfords this year as we (AAFA) are meeting in San Antonio this coming October.
If you do not have a death certificate for your grandfather, who died Feb. 26, 1992, or his Social Security application (#449-26-5416), those might be the places to start. His obituary might also contain some useful information.
