I visited Alford Scotland in 1989 and read a small booklet in the High School library that discussed where the name originated. In about the 12th century a group of soldiers were returning from battle. When they arrived at the Don river, which flows through Alford, they were asked where they wanted to cross the river and in a loud chorus they answered at the old ford(aul ford). I submit there was never a family there by the name of Alford.
