George Washington Alford was descended from what is called the "Irish John" branch of the family. John Alford, Sr was a weaver who emigrated to VA before the Revolutionary War. His sons George and John, Jr. were born in County Monaghan Ireland. They lived in Monroe WV then went west to present day Lincoln Co. WV. GWA resided in Lincoln County. I believe he was a grandson of George, but not sure without looking it up.
First thing - visit the family web site at http://www.alford.com/alford/aafa/homepage.html
You will find much info there. There is also a publication on Irish John's genealogy that Lynn Shelley may be able to provide. You will probably receive a posting from her very soon.
Also refer to Hardesty's WV Counties - history of Lincoln County for much detail on that branch of the family.
I myself am the great grandson of Robert Alford, George Alford,s youngest son, b.1814
Happy Hunting!
Charles Alford
