Documentation: Research of John Burnett of Reno, Nevada. Richard
Cardell of Jacksonville, Florida; Mattie Roberts and Eunice Dobson
Burnett of Sanderson, Florida; Wayne Alford of New York. Hansford
Alford was an early settler of Florida. He came to the State of
Florida in the 1830's with his father, John Alford. Their first
recorded land records are in Hamilton County, Florida. Later Hansford
and his father removed to Columbia County, Florida which later became
part of New River County, then later Baker County, Florida. Hansford
Alford was elected to the Florida Legislature as a Representative for
Columbia County, Florida in 1856. He served as a 1st lieutenant in the
Second Seminole Indian War in Johnson's Company, Florida Mounted Milita
from 1839 to 1840. He also served in Day's and Wilder's Company of the
13th Regiment of the 1st Brigade of the Florida Mounted Militia. He
was a slave owner, indian fighter, Farmer, State Represtative. He was
married twice. His first wife was Jincy Mann. After her death he
married Louvicy Crosby. Hansford Alford was said to have been killed
sometime in the 1860's due to his opposition to the Civil War. His
death was confirmed in the 1866/1867 tax records where an agent for the
wife of Hansford Alford is listed in tax records. A memorial
government marker was placed in his memory at Swift Creek Cemetery near
the graves of his daughters Mary Adeline Alford Roberts and Martha Ann
Alford Dobson. Hansford Alford and his wives have numerous descendants
in Florida. .
