Re: Alford's, Shelby County, TX

In Reply to: Alford's, Shelby County, TX by John Alford of 3047

My grandfather, A.E. Meador, came to Shelby County when he was three years old (1883 or 4). With his parents, James and Rebecca Burgess Meador, came his uncle John Alford. John Alford's wife was Mary Burgess, Rebecca's sister. Also with them was Mary and Rebecca's half sister Fannie Sap. Some other relatives came later, all the wives being Burgess sisters.
They all came originally from St.Clair County, Alabama, where several Alfords married Burgesses. Shortly before he died in 1957, my grandfather told my mother, who was taking notes, that John's son Joe Alford "lives across the river", presumably the Sabine. He also said that several other sons of John died young. These were Gilker, Charlie, Dennie, and Hoy.

Hope this may help you. If these are your Alfords, I have a little bit of information on marriages in Alabama and some other items.
