Moses, First--I would check two things-- 1)Who was the informant for the information on Ambrose's death certificate? Did they really know the identity of his parents? A death certificate is not a primary record for parents' names and birthplaces. 2)If you have the death certificate for the younger Jacob (Ambrose's son), who are listed as his parents? If his mother was not Orra Lent but a first marriage, then the name Jacob could have come from her side of the family rather than from Ambrose's.These are just suggestions and if you can find proof or other evidence of a Jacob Alford besides Ambrose's death certificate, I will be happy to have it. Is there any evidence of a Jacob in the census records of PA or MI in the appropriate time frame? The only other possibility I can see is that Ambrose was really the grandson of Oliver and Betsy Mallory and possibly a child of a son or daughter who was deceased by 1850. It would have been a fairly young child (about 16). If Oliver and Betsy married in 1816, several of their children are not in the 1850 census.
