Do you have any clues yet as to why Thomas and Columbus were living with other families and if there is a connection?
In the situation with Columbus it could be that his dad died and this man is hiw step-dad, but that's a big maybe. With Thomas the wife might be his sister, but coulsn't be his mother. Or, maybe both boys were hired out to another family to work and live with them. In either case I'm having trouble getting any farther back since the the 1840 only lists heads of households. I think I'm going to start looking for marriage data for James Gay/Mary and John Day/Margaret and see if anything shows up.
