Charles Alford & Jesse James

The Charles Alford I am referring to is the same listed in the previous query, and was my gr. gr. grandfather. Family legend has it that Charles Alford was a train conductor in Missouri and was robbed by Jesse James. He was born about 1857 in Hamburg, IL and probably moved to Hannibal, MO with his mother Sarah after his father's death in 1872. About 1901-03 he moved to New York City where he was an el-train conductor. Can anyone tell if our legend is fact or fiction?
