John ALFORD m Harriet CLARKE,Devon, 1821
Posted by: Douglas Hartley Date: July 27, 1998 at 23:39:11
  of 3047

Descended from John ALFORD who married Harriet CLARKE at Stoke Damerel, Devonport, DEVON, 10 July 1821. John and Harriet emigrated to Australia with their four children c.1840. John was from Cornwall, father's name Edward. Harriet's parents were Charles CLARKE and Elizabeth LOWMAN. Family traditions mention Sir Charles and Lady CLARKE. They were supposed to be close relatives of Harriet I think, but not necessarily her parents. John and Harriet maintained a high social standing in Australia and John was described as a Gentleman on his death certificate. A form of social snobbery may have persisted for two more generations. Anything familiar here to anyone?
