Alford Family Genealogy Forum

Dear Gale, If you can send me your mailing address, I will send you some info on this family. I just got some information tonight which may shed light on John Alford's background if he came from the same places as his wife's family. Jane McElhatten Alford (Thomas' mother) was the daughter of John McElhatten and Elizabeth Coulter. Elizabeth Coulter was the daughter of John Coulter and Jane ____. I have published copies of the wills of John and Jane Coulter (Grainger Co. TN). The Coulters were from Cumberland/Mifflin Co. PA and probably came down the Great Wagon Road to NC (all of TN was NC until 1796). There was a John Alford in Cumberland Co. PA from 1779 to 1787 and this could very possibly be Thomas H.'s grandfather. I have Thomas H.'s AR CSA pension record if you want a copy. He was pensioned starting in 1901. The only census in which we have him with a wife is 1860. I don't have the 1880 census and couldn't find him in 1870. I did not know about Linda as a child although I had the other two. Tennessee was married to a Fultz (I think I have the marriage record) but she was buried as Tennessee Alford. I would be most interested to get the additional descendants of Thomas in your line. I tried to get copies of the Boone Co. AR marriage records by mail but I wanted 13 marriages and they said I had to pay $5 for each one. I have been meaning to go there and copy them but just have not had time. By the way, I am not related to these Alfords but have investigated them in my position as Chairman of the AAFA Research Committee and also two of Thomas' brothers came to Dallas Co. MO when he and their parents went to Carroll Co. AR (I live in Springfield, MO).
