I have no proof, but do have a preety good theory; maybe it will lead to something. There was a William G. Alford born in November 1848 in Montgomery County. He was the son Henry Dortch Alford and he married Elsie Joe Ozier in 1872 in Montgomery County. To my knowledge he was the only William in Montgomery County in the 1880s. His children up to 1880 were: William Perry Alofrd (b. 12/5/1874, Ida Alford (b. 1876), and Mary Joe Alford (b. 1880). I beleive James Arnold (b. 1882) may have been the son of this William. Too bad the 1890 census was destroyed. Have you checked the 1900 Alabama soundex? Check for William Alford; Jmaes Arnold would have been 18, but still may have been at home.
