Thought I'd put my two cents in here.

As far as we know there is nothing new on the FIELD surname.

The DAWSON connection has been proven wrong. Either Mrs. Tressie
Bowman or Jewell Gallaugher noted that Mary Dawson might have been the wife of John because there was an Alford - Mary Dawson marriage in Maryland that would fit.

We later found it was Edward Alford.
