Dale, sounds like we should talk.Lewis is my husbands great grandfather, through Edward Henry and Raymond.I did notice that one of our dates didn't match, probably a typo on my part.My computer crashed and my mother passed away last summer and she had over 11,000 names in her family tree, none were of my husbands line.I've added over 2,000 names since then in both my line and my husbands.I still don't have it all back in there, but I've pasted what I have on the line.I do not have anything on John or Robert so that will be great to add!!Hope some of this is what you don't have....look forward to hearing from you.Connie

1.LEWIS LUDWIG GUSTAVE3 ALFF(JULIUS ALBERT2, GUSTAV1) was born August 12, 1872 in Hastings, Mills County, Iowa, and died December 08, 1956 in Clarinda, Page County, Iowa.He married ANNA MARGARETHA BROCKMAN January 23, 1895 in family farm Pottawattamie County, Iowa.She was born February 26, 1875 in Six miles west of Carson, Pottawattamie County, Iowa, and died August 27, 1973 in Mercy Hospital, Council Bluffs, Iowa.

He appeared on the census in 1880 in James Township, Pottawattamie County, Iowa.He appears on this census record with his parents and siblings as follows:
Louis, W, M, 8, Son, single, attended school, b. Iowa, parents b Prussia
He was a farmer.He had been farming near Neola, Iowa, before moving to his mothers' farm in 1911.He and his wife, Anna, were the only one at home when their house burnt in 1949.The fire occurred a week before Christmas, probably electrical in cause.They had gotten wiring just a month or so before then, and there had been a little snow and things got wet.Lewis burnt his head a bit getting out of the house.He got lost in a cornfield about 1950.There were many (perhaps 300) lawmen out looking for him.They found him in the bottom of a muddy creek.They took him to the Mental Health Institute in Clarinda, Page County, Iowa.Lewis had hypothermia from the cornfield incident and he was blind.He had long white hair and a long beard.He looked like an old mountain man.
He farmed most of his life in the Malvern area.He played the accordion.He did custom work for many years with a steam engine threshing machine, corn sheller, buzz saw and sawmill.He had a funny incident happen when the children still lived at home.The following story was told by one of Lewis' children in the Pottawattamie County, Iowa, History Book, circa 1978:"A neighbor noticed a light on upstairs all the time and several people coming to our house each week with one quite well dressed.The neighbor notified the authorities.The sheriff arrived with a search warrant to search the place.They were looking for a still. They thought we were bootleggers.Were they surprised to find the light upstairs was an incubator full of hen eggs ready to hatch.The people coming each week was a confirmation class.The well dressed man was a preacher."
Pall Bearers were John Alff Jr., Kenneth Breach, Wendell Alff, Lawrence Alloway, Eldon Conner and Donald Alff.
The Rev. Edward Heinicke, Pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church officiated.Funeral services were held at Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland, Iowa.
He is survived by his wife Anna, six sons, Robert of Council Bluffs, John and Alfred of Henderson, Lawrence of Casey, George of Oakland and Delmar of Macedonia, three daughters, Mrs Minnie Alloway of Jewell, Mrs. Anna Breach of Conway and Mrs. Emma Connor of Carson.
Also surviving are a brother, Henry, of Sutherland, two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Foley of Vancouver, Washington and Mrs. Mathilda Drefke of Los Angeles, 25 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren
Music was by Mr. and Mrs. Paul Leaders with Mrs. Fred Fritz as pianist.Norma Pulyer, Joan Alff, Dorothy Wilson, Betty Myers and Joyce Rudolph were in charge of flowers.
All of Lewis and Anna's children attended Belknap School #5.Lewis played the accordian and Anna played the piano.She played for church services and at home for the family sing alongs.All the boys played the accordian except one.Tow of the girls chorded on the organ.They played for dances that used to be hled in the homes.The boys still played in the mid1990's at nursing homes, family reunions and other events.In 1978, the family of brothers and sisters all lived within a radius of 85 miles of the home place.

She appeared on the census in 1880 in Pottawattamie County, Iowa.Anna was age fivein this census, listed with her parents and siblings.She was confirmed in 1895 in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Oakland, Iowa.She died of congestive heart failure with pulmonary edema, duration five months, with a condition of chronic pyelonephiritis for two years and intractable heart failure due to coronary artery disease (duration five months) She died at 4:30 pm.
She played the organ for church services and at home for the family.She and her sister, Amelia, as girls, had their own team to husk corn in the fall.They shoveled off their own loads too.
Services were held at 2:00 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Oakland, August 30, 1973.

Pallbearers were:Garedon(sp) Connor, Donald Alff, Kenneth Breach, Garland Alff, Dwaine Alff and Marvin Alff
Rosalie Downing, Norma Culver and Joyce Stoker were in charge of flowers.
Surviving her are her children: Minnie Alloway, Neola, Iowa, John L. Alff, Carson, Iowa, Robert Allf, Council Bluffs, Anna Breach, Conway, Iowa, Emma Carter, Carson, Iowa, Lawrence Alff, Casey, Iowa, George Alff, Oakland, Iowa, Alfred Alff, McClelland and Delmar Alff, Macedonia, Iowa. Also surviving are 23 grandchildren, 55 great grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.She was proceeded in death by her parents: her husband, Lewis in 1956, a son, Edward, two grandsons, four brothers and three sisters.
She was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church her entire life and was confirmed in 1895.

Anna completed the eigth grade.She stayed with her parents and worked on the farm until she married.She worked with her husband, Ray, at the Glenwood State School for four years, beginning in 1956.They worked there to make payments on the farm, whiile their son Kenneth, stayed home on the farm.She resided at Conway, Iowa in 1956.She helped her daughter, Linda, in the Sharpsburg general grocery store, beginning in 1972.She moved from the farm to Sharpsburg in 1973.
She played the guitar and steel guitar.She played with her brothers, George, Lawrence and John Alff in the Alff band.
Her services were held at Novinger Taylor Funeral HOme in Bedford, Iowa.Anna's grandson in law, Dennis Brown sang several solos.Officiating was Rev. Al Rusk, Casket Bearers were her grandsons, Roger Breach, Wesley Culver, MichaelBreach, and Jeffery Witt and grndsons in law Harold Spring and Dennis Brown.
