Having just returned from a trip to Scotland and England I would like to share some information with you. After traveling to Lanark, I am convinced that Thomas Alexander, who married Marion Peadie in Glasgow in 1684, at the great Glasgow Cathedral, was an active 'Covenanter'; however, I also believe that he and his immediate family in the Lanark area were not 'radical Covenanters', but much more 'pragmatic'. My conclusions are based on research of over 20 years but comes down to this: They lived and appear NOT to have been exiled from the area. Most of the extreme radical/militant Covenanters were executed or - and this happened quite often - they were exiled. I have pictures of the markers in the cemetery where they are honored, along with other information on the following names: David Alexander and his wife, Eliza Benton, who died in Edinburgh in 1886, aged 75 years. Names of the men executed for being radical 'Covenanters'/'Traitors': Robert Baillie of Jerviswood, William Hervey and Thomas Lacklan of Lanark; condemned to be executed as 'Traitors' to the British Crown and the Anglican Church (but fled and escaped): From the town of Lanark were David White Smith, Gideon Weir Gunsmith, David Gibson, Thomas Pillans, James Lawrie Writer, Archibald Simpson, William Ferguson, John Semple Mason, Thomas Inglis, Alexander Anderson, John Pumphrey, William Padzian Mason; of the Lanark Parish but not town were: John Jack Nemphlar and Robert Lockhart of Burkhill. There's much more information and I will present it later to the Scottish National Library in Edinburgh, where the Alexander Record II copies are located, btw.
