I know almost nothing about them, but, maybe, this small bit will help someone who can help to make a connection.

Barzilla Sage's younger brother Ira, born about 1847 or 1848 in CT, was married to Margaret Alexander, born about 1847 or 1848, in Union County, SC. Her parents were William (b. NC, about 1819) and Mary (b. SC, about 1828/1829) Alexander. Margaret had several brothers but none, so far as I know, named Thomas or Joseph. Some names of brothers were Robert, John, Brooks, Judson, Gregory, and Raymond. William had an older brother named Robert, but I don't know anything about his family.

The Sages were heavily involved in railroads; so, it should be possible to get information on them.

As an interesting aside, Ira and Margaret had some kind of relationship to the Hardy of Laurel and Hardy.
