Gwen,
Private Joseph Alewine of Co I, 19th SC Infantry Regiment, CSA is certainly your Joseph A. Alewine. His half-brothers George Washington Alewine and Francis Marion Alewine also served in in Co I of the 19th. Other neighbors and cousins like John Calvin Alewine and John Darby Alewine were in the same unit. Their neighbor Addison Clincscales was the Company Commander.

Footenote.com, an online National Archives subscription website, has a partial service record for Joseph from 1864. It notes he enlisted (likely re-enlisted) on 13 August 1863 at Chattanooga, TN for three years and was due a $50 bounty.

An entry dated 1 April 1864 stated was absent due to being wounded at Chickamauga on 20 September 1863 (6 months prior!)and was currently in a hospital in Columbia, SC. The battle near the Tennessee-Georgia state line had the second highest number of casualties in the war, with Gettysburg being the bloodiest.

Hope this helps,
Bill Alewine
