Jacob is a farmer with property worth $1200.Martha, Mary and Laura have attended school in the past year. Their oldest son William is noted as cripple. All in the Alewine family were born in South Carolina.

Obituary, Anderson Independent February 24, 1887,p.5: "Mr. Jacob Alewine, a highly respected citizen of this County, died at his home in Martin Township on Saturday, 19th inst., from paralysis, aged about 79 years.His remains were interred at First Creek Church on last Sunday, Rev. M. McGee conducting the funeral services."

Alewine was accused of the murder of a black man in February 1885 in Abbeville.[Also see Augusta Chronicle, February 26, 1885, p2 & March 3, 1885, p.2.]The coroner ruled the death a homicide. Though some of the witnesses in the grand jury testimony seemed unreliable, he was indicted by grand jury and released on bond raised by his brother William M. Alewine.[ Could not find an article in Abbeville Press with trial information.Hope to find some day, might be a great read.] Obviously, he did not go to jail.Went on to live a long life in the Iva community

"Anderson, S.C.The reunion of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Alewine's family at their beautiful country home near Anderson S. C. was an event of much pleasure to their many friends.The occasion was a very happy and successful one including in its delightful hospitality a few friends and neighbors who added much to the love and good feeling that was so evident throughout this pleasant day.
The children present were Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Alewine, Mr. and Mrs. M. P. Alewine, Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Alewine, Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Alewine, Mr. J. Monroe Alewine, Mr. and Mrs. A. T. Hall and Mr. and Mrs. B. C. Alewine of Atlanta, Ga. All the grandchildren were present, there being fourteen in all. Those present of the neighbors were Mr. George Cabert and family, Mr. W. R. McAdams and family, Mr. Julius Sullivan and family, Mrs. (illegible) and Margaret Millford."

"I will that a plain marble tombstone be placed to my grave, the cost of the same not to exceed fifty dollars.I will that the following inscription be carved on said tombstone - HERE LIES A CONFEDERATE SOLDIER."For whatever reason, this request was not fulfilled by his heirs on his gravestone.

"Mrs. E. F. Alewine, wife of Mr. John D. Alewine, died at her home near Antreville, in Abbeville County, last Monday night [January 12, 1891], and the announcement of her death will be heard with sorrow throughout the lower section of this County, where she was well known. Mrs. Alewine had been in feeble health for a long time, but her illness was not considered serious until about two weeks ago.She was about 56 years of age, and had spent her life in such a way that she was fully prepared to meet the summons of death. In her early life she joined the Baptist Church, and was a most earnest, active member.She will be greatly missed in her neighborhood, and her memory will long be cherished by her many friends.She leaves a husband, six sons and one daughter to mourn her death.On Wednesday her remains were interred in the First Creek Churchyard, Rev. R.D. Hawkins conducting the funeral services."[Note: I believe she was survived by seven sons.]
