Gerrilynn, one hint I can give you regarding spelling is that it depends on the national origin. There's the Latin based word for German. In Spanish and Protugese it's spelled Aleman. In French it's spelled Allemagne (or something like that, it's been many years since high school french). I don't know the spelling in Italian but I'm sure it's similar.
The spelling you mentioned, Allemand, may be more Germanic based, I've seen people's names from places like The Netherlands with similar spellings. The word/name Aleman comes from the mideival Germanic clan called the Alemanni, so the connection between the Latin and German variations makes sense. Maybe this will help you narrow your search.
