I posted here, submitted the post, and it's disappeared. A later post under Edward is showing as posted so I guess I need to repeat the information on Jonathan. A Jonathan Aldrich (Aldridge in the 1820 and 1830 U.S. census's for NY) signed his name as Jonathan Aldrich when he bought land for himself and two sons, Edward and Peter, in Wolcott, Cayuga, later, Rose, Wayne, NY. He bought the land from an agent for Sir J.L. Johnstone. There are several more land records for additional lands, disbursal to sons, and final sale of Edward's share in 1835, copies of which are in my possession thanks to the friendliness of Phylis Wygant Aldrich of Burlington, MI who did extensive work on this line of the Aldrich Clan. This Jonathan, who was called "Old Macajah" by the writer of a History of Rose, NY, was said by this writer to have "come up from Chenango Co." so he could possibly be the Father of the Jonathan you are looking for.
My suspicion, whether he did "come up from Chenango" or not is that he is the Jonathan Aldridge who shows up in the 1790 census for Kingsbury, Washington Co. NY and who was b. circa 1760 to a Jonathan Aldrich who was born 1736 in Duxbury/Uxbridge MA to Edward Aldrich who moved to Eksa
ter (sp) NH in his later years. Edward's son Jonathan is reported by Genealogist Alvin James Aldrich to have died young, but I don't believe he did. I believe he moved west with his father's cousin's (Mehitabel Aldrich Elliot) family circa 1758 first to Dover, Duchess Co. and then to Kingsbury, Washington Co. NY.
I have no source for this conjecture other than names of children, dates of births, that coincide, and census records of Jonathan in the right place at the right time. Phylis W. Aldrich told me she paid for some research in the Kingsbury area that turned up nothing. So there is nothing certain about the whereabouts of this Jonathan before he shows up in Rose, NY with two grown sons. If someone comes up with more information backing up this hypothesis, or refuting it, please, please pass it on to
seerbeer@aol.com. Thanks greatly - Chuck Mason, husband to Marilyn Mae Aldrich Mason.
