I am descended from either Anthony or Thomas Alderton, Shotley, England, 1809,and I have been to Shotley several times to research the history. Two good sources, prior to the internet, are Kelly's Directory for the period(Kelley's Green Book) and a "History of Suffolk", by Rev. Hervey.
