Beth,
You are one of the few postings that I have seen that correctly states the original name of this family. An uncle to my father-in-law, an attorney, wrote a book concerning the five brothers that came to this country. He had conducted some extensive research. This book - name ? - was written back in the 1950's - 1960's. John Alderman was his name, lived in Hillsville, Va., and had stated that the original spelling was OLTERMANN > OLTERMAN > ALTERMAN > ALDERMAN.

John Alderman was his name, lived in Hillsville, Va., and had stated that the original spelling was OLTERMANN > OLTERMAN > ALTERMAN > ALDERMAN.Hillsville, at one time was covered with Alderman kinfolk and somewhere just about everyone was related. The Matriarch of my husband's line, his grandmother, passed away several years ago. The Patriarch, his grandfather, died in 1968. It seems that most of the men of this family die between the ages of 71 - 76. This couple was Bernard Eugene ALDERMAN m. Zilphia SHOCKLEY. Hillsville is where my father-in-law was born, and his father before him. Most of my father's-in-law brothers and sisters stayed in the area of Hillsville, Galax, Wytheville, and one brother lives on the old homestead.
Frederick ALDERMAN and Roxie WATSON are in line with my husband's bunch. I would have to pull his family file up on his computer to check out the other names that Brenda Jones had mentioned.

I have seen the thick volume titled 'Aldermans to America', I believe that's the name of the book, at Clayton Genealogy Library in Houston; however, I hadn't taken the time to sit down with it and locate connections to my husband's family. My family hunting takes up quite a bit of my time. Plus, his family had already been published.

My husband has some old pictures of some of his ancestors.
