Genealogy is not based on one's reliance upon the veracity of what a grandparent says. It is based on substantiated facts: hard, documented evidence augmented by a firm knowledge of history.

By your own admission, you are a Chicano. That, of course, means that your family is from Mexico. The first Alderete in Mexico arrived in the 1530's. The Alderete families of Mexico are concentrated in the northern state of Durango (and neighboring regions) where their presence has been documented for over 300 years.

Given the history of the Alderete's in Mexico, it is not enough for you to assert a different origin just because your grandmother said so. You need proof.
