Long ago, I posted a message (#6) on this forum regarding the Basque origins of the surname Alderete. Basque is Basque. People today may differentiate between French Basque and Spanish Basque, but they are the same people. Alderete is just as much Spanish Basque as it is French Basque.

You should be a little more skeptical about what your grandmother told you about your French ancestor. Alderete's in the US are predominantly from Durango, Mexico, where they settled over 300 years ago. You will also find Alderete's who settled in New Mexico over 200 years ago.

My guess is that your Alderete family is from Durango. That would mean that your ancestors have been in Mexico for over 300 years.

Do a little more digging, and let me know what you find.
