French-Basque descendents of Alderete
Posted by: Manuel Benjamin Alderete Date: January 21, 2001 at 13:59:01

Not too long ago, at 27 years old, I finally discovered from my grandmother that my great grandfather (her father) was directly from France.

Along with the postings on this web site, I have also learned that "Alderete" is derived from the Basque people of Spain/France.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!
Like others , I have also learned that the Moors of Northern Africa conquered Southern Europe (Spain up to France, where they were repelled by Charles Martel) for 700 years up until "Independence" in 1492 (does that date ring a bell?)

So, naturally I thought the "Al" in Alderete was of Moorish origin. Apparently it was not. But the similarity is interesting.

SO,
Anyone who knows much about French "Alderete"s drop me a line and enlighten me a little.

Thanks
