I have traced several Alderete families back to the late 1700's in Canelas, Durango, Mexico. Large numbers of these Alderete's continue to live in Canelas. However, during this century, the Canelas Alderete's have spread to other parts of Durango, Sinaloa and the U.S.

Incidentally, in case anyone did not know, Alderete is a Basque surname. Alderete is a derivative of of the Basque "ALDAREGIA" that has two meanings: 1. Sitio del lugar montuoso; and 2. Sitio del lugar esteril.

Modern derivations of "ALDAREGIA" include Aldaregui, Aldareguia, Aldarreguia, Aldereguia, Alderete and Aldrete.
