Alday Family Genealogy Forum

Hello Robert. Sorry, but I just came across your posting today. Most interesting. The correct dates for Josiah Alday/Allday's militia service are 1768-1774. The date of 1781 which you mentioned for Johnson Womack going "to the widow Alday's house in GA near Waynesborough on the waters of Brier Creek" is a date which seems to fit well with the few available facts for Josiah Alday/Allday going back to that early period. Josiah Alday/Allday may have died in 1774 immediately before the start of the Revolutionary War. Historical records indicate that "Josiah Allday" was first commissioned into the local militia as an "ensign" in 1768. In early 1774, he was promoted to and commissioned a "captain" in the Augusta Division of the Georgia militia (Third Company, Fourth Regiment). In November of 1774, without further explanation, Captain Thomas Lewis assumed command of "Captain Allday's Company" (Third Company, Fourth Regiment). Possibly Captain Allday died in the line of duty or maybe he was killed during the Indian fighting of the period? Your specific date of 1781 for Johnson Womack and Richard Coody [sic Cody] having gone to "the widow Alday's house" certainly seems to fit the above scenario. The Josiah Alday/Allday family lived somewhere in the immediate vicinity of Waynesboro, that being approximately 30 miles distant from frontier Augusta. Thank you for explaining the family connection shared by Jacob Womack, Sarah Womack, and Anne Womack Alday/Allday, plus that of the Cody family. You've made a solid connection. Very good to hear from you. Can you tell me anything more?
Best regards, Walter Goss, Montgomery, AL
